New Year, New You

If December is known for holiday fun and indulgence, January is famous for making resolutions. Millions of people, all over the country, wake up on January 1st, prepared with goals for the new year. Some want to get in shape, others want to get out of debt, or save money. We all start out with the best of intentions, but come the end of February or early March our resolve weakens. This year, set yourself up to succeed. We have listed a few tips that will help you follow through with your goals for 2016.

  1. Be realistic. Habits don’t just die off instantly. You have to give yourself goals that are attainable and feasible.
  2. Have a plan. Make a list of short-term accomplishments that will help you work towards your final goal.
  3. Create an outline. Using your list, create a month by month outline of what you will work on each month. This way you won’t lose focus especially once February and March come around.
  4. Make an inspiration book. Get a book or a folder where you jot down inspirational quotes, pictures, poems, or articles. Whenever you are feeling unmotivated, look through your book!
  5. Recruit cheerleaders. Tell supportive friends and family members about your goal. Let them celebrate your successes and help motivate you!
  6. Reward yourself. When you hit a mini goal, or complete something in your plan, celebrate it! Go see a movie, enjoy a glass of wine over dinner, or anything else that will make you feel pampered.
  7. Keep track. Research different ways to effectively record your success. Keep it somewhere you can see every day.
  8. Don’t go on a guilt trip. If you overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. A resolution is a work in progress.
  9. Stick it out. Experts say that it takes 21 days to create a habit and 6 months for that habit to become permanent.
  10. Keep going! When your resolve weakens at the end of February or in March, reconsider. Before quitting, make an appointment with yourself to reconsider your resolution. If it’s no longer working for you, tweak it and keep moving!
