Glass Academy (Dearborn)

Founded by artists Chris Nordin and Michelle Plucinsky, the Glass Academy is where students can try glassblowing. This 14,000 square foot facility is on the city’s west side, and the website states that it aims to expand the consumer’s awareness of how handcrafted glass can be utilized as a functional and/or decorative element in modern applications. The academy is open to the public four days a week, and classes include Custom Mug Night, Mantello Hook, and Michigan Icicle.

Pewabic (Detroit)

Pewabic was founded in 1903 by a woman whose experiments with glaze changed the face of contemporary ceramics. The studio’s staff dedicates themselves to providing exceptional artistic and educational ceramic arts programs to all ages. Each adult class includes 28 hours of weekly open studio time, and options include Abstract and Figurative Ceramic Sculpture, Wheel-throwing, and Tile-making.
