Just nineteen minutes from Fairlane Woods Apartments is a neighborhood filled with brightly colored buildings and the smell of fresh tortillas wafting through the air. It’s called Mexicantown and it’s where the first Mexican families who settled in Detroit called home. There are several places to shop and dine including:
Xochi’s Gift Shop – Xochi’s proudly specializes in Mexican imports. For almost thirty years, the staff has handpicked all of the items so that the quality is guaranteed. On the shelves, you’ll find Mexican folk art, clay pottery, handmade crafts, and so much more.
Honey Bee Market La Colmena – Since 1956, this market has been dedicated to offering quality products and customer service. Voted “Most Fun at the Grocery Store” by the Metro Times, its slogan is “Wake up and smell the chorizo” as it sells thirty thousand pounds of its homemade spicy Mexican sausage every year. The store also carries a large selection of fruits, vegetables, delicatessen goods, and seafood.
Taqueria El Ray – Tacqueria El Ray is a family owned business that’s home of the best grilled chicken in Detroit. Their goal is to provide the metro Detroit area with the great taste of Mexican cuisine in a laid-back atmosphere and menu options include Quesadillas, Tortas, and Chicken Tacos.
Detroit 75 Kitchen – Detroit 75 Kitchen is an artisan stationary food truck that was named the top food truck in the city by Best Business Detroit when it launched in 2015. It’s said to have the best sandwiches in the area and other menu items include BBQ Chicken Egg Rolls, Chicken Tenders, and Fattoush Salad.
