For the last thirty-eight years, Labor Day Weekend has brought a world-class event to the city.
We’re talking about the Detroit Jazz Festival, and it is the largest free premier jazz festival on the globe.
Everyone from jazz legends to up-and-coming artists takes to the stage, and the line-up includes:
Herbie Hancock – Considered a true icon of modern music, Herbie Hancock’s career has spanned an impressive five decades. He has won fourteen Grammy Awards, and his website states that few artists in the industry have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie.
The Ali Bey Quartet – Ali Bey grew up in Detroit and began playing the bass guitar at the age of eleven. His middle school teacher recognized his talent and steered him toward jazz, and Ali’s professional career began in high school when he played throughout the Detroit area alongside Harold McKinney. The Ali Bey Quartet formed in 2009, and will likely draw a crowd when they take to the Absopure Water Front Stage at 2:00 p.m. on September 2.
Dee Dee Bridgewater – Dee Dee Bridgewater is a three-time Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter as well as Tony Award-winning actress for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. In 1970, she made her debut as lead vocalist for one of the premier jazz orchestras of the time, and today she entertains fans around the world as a solo artist.
The Detroit Jazz Festival is just of the musical events that you can enjoy if you call Fairlane Woods Apartments home. Please contact us to schedule a tour.Back to all posts
