Less than twenty-five minutes from Fairlane Woods Apartments is a 125 acre property that’s home to 2,400 animals from around the world. It’s known as the Detroit Zoo and it is the largest paid family attraction in the state with more than 1.6 million visitors every year. There are several exhibits to explore such as:
Situated along the zoo’s southwest border, this exhibit features animals from North and South America. As you explore the North American Grasslands eco-system, you will see wildlife from the forest to the prairie such as bald eagles, grizzly bears, and bison. Perhaps the most popular animals in this area are the majestic wolves that are viewed from a historic log cabin.
As you meander through the South American Grasslands, you will discover animals native to the deep rain forests of Colombia and the intrepid coasts of Chile. They include guanacos (ancestors of modern llamas), Chilean flamingos, and bush dogs.
Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat
This exhibit features a 5,900-gallon pool that four charming river otters call home. They weigh between 25 and 30 pounds and enjoy entertaining the crowd with funny antics on the water slide.
Polk Penguin Conservation Center
Known as the most extraordinary center for penguins on the globe, it’s home to more than eighty penguins that have fun swimming in their 326,000-gallon pool. Visitors can get up close views of these birds through an underwater gallery with an acrylic window and two acrylic underwater tunnels.
